Pulingome saw the first public agitation in 1982, against the proposed Dam at Kakkadavu near Mathil. The planning of this project was done in 1958 with the intention of providing water to the paddy fields in the western parts of Mathil. The project was found viable at that time as the area which was going to be in the catchment area of the Dam was comparatively less populous and undeveloped. Moreover, people were unaware of the environmental impacts of such a major dam. The project remained in papers till 1980 and it was taken up for execution in 1982. Pulingome and neighbouring areas have undegone tremendous developments during 1958 – 1982 period. So many goverment institutions, roads, schools, banks, religious institutions and hospitals have come up in this region. The townships at Cherupuzha and Pulingome had become major commercial centres by then. With induction of this new dam all these areas were expected to be immersed in water. Places like Kozhichal, Edavaramba, Rajagiri, Thayyeni, Chittarickal, Palavayal, Thirumeni, Prappoyil, Padiyottuchal etc. were feared to be isolated. The people of this area gathered under the banner of “Malayora Samrakshana Samiti” and started a series of agitations against the proposed Kakkadavu Dam Project. The struggle continued till 1986 with the whole hearted support of all sections of society. The struggle succeeded when the project was withdrawn by the Government in 1986. This struggle demonstrated the unity, strength and determination of people in and around Pulingome.
